Wankhede Stadium’s batting pitch, short boundaries, and finally some in-form batters — SRH would be looking to make the most of MI match on Thursday, and get to the first ever 300+ score in the history of IPL. The thinking is very clear. Whether it happens or not is a different story, but the intent speaks a thousand words.
Instead of replacing the injured Adam Zampa from a leg-spinner, or even an off, the team decided to go for little-known dasher in Ravichandran Smaran. Though fairly new in the domestic circle, he has been consistent, and has a great strike-rate too, which perfectly fits the bill with SRH.
The left-hand batter, in 6 T20 matches till now has scored 170 runs at an average of 34, and a strike rate of 170, and a best of 57. In the LIST A too, he has a strike-rate of 100, and has scored 433 runs in 10 matches, at an average of 72. In the Ranji Trophy, he has 516 runs to his name in 7 matches, at an average of 64.
Now where is the place in SRH, or who would Smaran replace, one would ask? Abhishek Sharma has already bounced back to form with his 141-run blinder vs PBKS, and Travis Head is their best batter in the season again. Now, the toss up is clearly between Ishan Kishan and Nitish Kumar Reddy.
If the openers shine, the middle-order has been bit of the problem, where Ishan, Heirich Klaasen and Nitish haven’t been at their best still. The all-rounder has 112 runs in 6 matches, at an average of 22, Klaasen has173 in 6, Ishan has 136 in as many. Just statistically, it would be Nitish, who is all but out, if 300 has to become a possibility. What makes matters worse for him is, his strike-rate of 119.
So, if SRH really want to become the first team to score 300 in the IPL, this one change is a must for them. Which of course, won’t guarantee the score, but removing the weak link would only help them.
