Chennai Super Kings spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his decision to retire from the Indian Premier League. His decision comes weeks after reports claimed that CSK were planning to release the off spinner. Ashwin, who made his IPL debut with CSK in 2009, returned to the team after being released by RR before the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Taking to social media platform X, Ashwin announced that his time as an IPL cricketer has come to an end. Revealing his next move, the Tamil Nadu spinner said that he will now go on to explore various T20 leagues across the globe. Now that he has retired from both IPL and international cricket, Ashwin can throw his hat into the ring for competitions like BBL, MLC, SA20, ILT20 among other competitions.

Ashwin was bought for a whooping Rs 9.75 crore b CSK in the mega auction. However, he failed to live up the expectations as he had a rather sub-par season in IPL 2025. He finished with just seven wickets from 9 matches and was quite expensive throughout the tournament.
The veteran spinner brings the curtains down on his career and has finished with 187 wickets from 221 matches, averaging 30.22. CSK, PBKS, DC and RR are the teams that he has been a part of during his IPL career.

Ashwin’s decision to retire comes weeks after he had openly said that he was expecting clarity from CSK ahead of IPL 2026.
“After each season ends, it’s the responsibility of the franchise to communicate to the player whether they wish to retain him or not. Every player demands clarity. I don’t have anything in my hand; I’m just seeking clarity (from CSK),” he said.
