Gurjapneet Singh became the talking point during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. But it wasn’t due to his performance, but an injury. Halfway through the season, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced that Gurjapneet won’t be taking further part in the tournament, with Dewald Brevis replacing him.
The Brevis-Gurjapneet controversy
It wasn’t mentioned when, how, or where Gurjapneet was injured. This started the rumour mills. Many stated that CSK was using the injury replacement rule as a loophole to right the wrongs they did during the IPL 2025 auction.
Brevis signed for INR 2.20 crore, the same as Gurjapneet, and went on a tear. The talented South African batter scored 180 runs at 37.50 with a 180-strike rate and was perhaps the only positive for an otherwise train wreck of an IPL 2025 season.
Because of Brevis’ success, the criticism continued. Many left that Gurjapneet wasn’t really injured but was forced by CSK to fake an injury. The tall left-arm pacer has debunked these theories. He confirms that he had an injury in the groin and wasn’t at his physical best.
“I had a niggle in my groin, so I was not 100 percent fit. Somewhere it was painful, somewhere it was okay. It was confusing. It was an on-and-off kind of a niggle. It was irritating me,” Gurjapneet told RevSportz.
The 6’3″ tall pacer didn’t play much, as it was the off-season. That was until June, when he played in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). Gurjapneet played all the matches but wasn’t at his best, taking 5 wickets in 7 matches for the Siechem Madurai Panthers.
‘I did a good rehab. Now I feel like I have recovered,” he added.
But he’s back at his best now. Gurjapneet has been selected for the South Zone in the Duleep Trophy and will play against the North Zone on September 4.
