Washington Sundar rivela l’alterco con Ben Stokes all’Old Trafford durante la controversia sulla stretta di mano lo ha acceso.
Washington Sundar was at the forefront of all the action in the recently concluded India vs England Test series. The Anderson Tendulkar Trophy saw all 5 Tests go to the final day with spars flying as tensions rose. Sundar emerged as one of India’s heroes with both bat and ball, with a century to help draw the game at Old Trafford.
Handshake drama fired me up: Sundar after Old Trafford row with Ben Stokes
Washington Sundar finished the India vs England series with 284 runs, including a fighting 101 not out at Old Trafford. Sundar, promoted to No.5 helped India bat out Day 5 to clinch a draw and keep the series alive. It was his maiden Test century stitching a century stand with Ravindra Jadeja in response to England’s 300+ lead.
The game wasn’t without drama. With the match heading to a draw, Ben Stokes offered to call it a draw. Sundar and Jadeja refused, leading to a war of words. The match ended after they reached their milestones, with Stokes bowling Harry Brook and Joe Root in tandem.
“We’ve seen a lot of such things happen, not just in cricket, but in any sport. I mean, that’s how sport is. It brings out a lot. I think it was just an experience for all of us, honestly. You ask this to any player — that’s exactly what you would hear. Especially in Test cricket, you want to be challenged because that’s exactly what you expect every single day,” Sundar told Wisden.
When quizzed whether that altercation fired him, Sundar shot “100 percent.”
The Old Trafford set up India’s win at the Oval. While it took a lion hearted spell from Mohammed Siraj to clinch a victory, it would have meant little had India lost in Manchester. However, Sundar was quick to praise the India fast bowler.
“I mean, just the way the game turned out after every session was fabulous. Especially on Day 5, that 40 minutes was super intense because when you know the target has come down to single digits, you never know — anything could happen. Literally one delivery could change the entire course of the game and take it from the opposition,” he added.
