L’ex selettore dell’India K Srikkanth ha affermato che CSK stava cercando di passare da R Ashwin nell’IPL 2026 come era alla fine della sua carriera
Former Indian selector K Srikkanth claimed that Ashwin was at at the back end of his career in the IPL. The veteran spinner, who retired from international cricket earlier in December 2024, reportedly sought his release from CSK ahead of IPL 2026. Ashwin returned to CSK after nearly a decade after being bought for a whooping Rs 9.75 cr in the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, he had a rather miserable season on his comeback to CSK.
Ashwin’s career in IPL all but over?
In a video on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth pointed out that even though Ashwin had done well for India, Tamil Nadu and CSK, he was at the fag end of his career and franchise cricket needed good bowlers to win championships. He noted that CSK had improved their batting in IPL 2025 by making mid-season signings such as Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis and Urvil Patel and that the five-time champions now needed to get some good bowlers.
“But that doesn’t mean they’re going to win championships. If you look at the last two years, CSK didn’t qualify. So what did they do? They tried to pick the best team. If you look at the younger guys, Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, and Urvil Patel, they played brilliantly in the last few matches. So the batting looks strong. So they need to get some good bowlers. So they’ll obviously try to form a team that’ll win a championship for them,” Srikkanth said.
In IPL 2025, Ashwin only managed to take 7 wickets from 9 matches and was quite expensive, boasting of an economy rate of 9.12. Srikkanth pointed out that the veteran spinner, even before he made his return to CSK, was left out for Washington Sundar in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The former India selector said that corporate and franchise cricket was as such that the team would surely move on and look to get better bowlers.
“The point is, he’s at the back end of his career. Poor fellow. He’s done brilliantly. But in franchise cricket, it is bound to happen. It’s a corporate cricket. The same corporate cricket is giving you crores of money. They are also rolling out so much money, no? They are giving you crores,” he added.
