Ex-cricketers Sanjay Bangar and Aaron Finch have given their verdict on PBKS opener Priyansh Arya’s inclusion in the Indian cricket team. They believe that despite the impressive performances in IPL 2025, the 24-year-old should not be rushed into the Indian T20I team just yet. As a young player for Punjab Kings (PBKS), Priyansh scored a blistering 69 off 35 balls against KKR last night.
A need for patience
During the rain-interrupted KKR vs PBKS, both Bangar and Finch talks about the importance of allowing Priyansh to gain more experience. Bangar, who is also a former India coach, emphasised the value of having Priyansh play another successful IPL season before considering him for international cricket. “This is the first season of Priyansh Arya and you certainly want to have him play another similar sort of a season before you sort of push him in the international circuit because if you see, it takes time for a batter to understand his game,” Bangar said.
Understanding the game and opportunities
Bangar also questioned whether there are enough vacancies in the Indian T20I team, saying that other talented players like Sai Sudharsan and Abhishek Sharma have yet to receive consistent national opportunities. He believes in the importance of grounding in domestic cricket, Bangar stated, “It will be great if he goes back to domestic cricket and score runs in first-class cricket as well, because that’s the grounding that you want.”
Finch’s take on managing expectations
Aaron Finch echoed Bangar’s sentiments, cautioning against putting undue pressure on Priyansh. “I think what’s key in a situation like this is you don’t put too much pressure on such a young kid,” Finch said. He noted that many players may underperform after a breakout year due to increased pressure and analysis. Finch advised that the best course is to let Priyansh play freely, allowing his talent to develop naturally. “If it’s going to happen, it’ll happen down the track and just allow that to happen through weight of performances,” Finch added.
