Nitish Kumar Reddy has never led a side in any big tournament previously. Yet, he stands out as one Indian star who could succeed Pat Cummins as the next Sunrisers Hyderabad captain. The argument of being an inexperienced leader can take a hike, given that the likes of Kohli, Pant and even the legendary Dhoni had rather zero leadership experience before being elevated to the position.
Can Nitish Reddy become next SRH captain?
First and foremost, Nitish is one of the rare players who represents his home state in the IPL. Although he is a part of Andhra Pradesh in the domestic circuit, he enjoys equal fan following in Hyderabad as well. In fact, no other team apart from SRH has a foreign captain at the helm of affairs. Perhaps, an Indian captain could most likely take them to the elusive cup that they last won in 2016.
Make no mistake, Nitish Reddy has witnessed a meteoric rise since his breakout season in IPL 2024. First, he scored 303 runs from 13 matches, averaging 33.66 in IPL 2024. His stunning performances earned him a call-up to the Indian team. He wasted no time in impressing in his very first Test series – the all-important Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
In that series, which turned heads towards him quite literally, he amassed 298 runs from 5 matches. It included an inspiring 114-run knock in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. He managed to breach the 40+ mark on four out of nine occasions in the series in Down Under, making a name for himself as an youngster who was just playing his debut Test series.
He hasn’t been in great touch lately, especially in IPL 2025. In fact, he recovered just in time for the tournament, having sustained an injury during the IND vs ENG T20I series earlier this year.

However, he is one off the potential stars who could replace Cummins as SRH captain in the future. He surely needs to step up and deliver with both bat and ball – given that he is a credible all-rounder. But given that he has the ability to create an impact, alongside being a “local boy”, Reddy surely deserves to be groomed as the next captain.
